The idea for GunOps™ was born out of necessity through a partnership between two colleagues, Rocky Edwards, a Forensic Firearm Examiner and Jon Centanni, a Sergeant and Gang Unit Supervisor working at that time at the Santa Ana Police Department in Orange County, California.

Increased workloads caused by rising levels of gun and gang violence was threatening to overwhelm the law enforcement resources available to them.

They knew from their training and experience that every gun used in a crime has the potential to generate information which can be of significant value in helping to solve gun crimes. They knew that some of the most vital information needed was generated from inside (transferred to fired ammunition components) and outside every crime gun and that when fully exploited, this data can be used to generate actionable information of tactical and strategic crime solving value. They also knew all too well, that in order for this data to be of most value it must be collected, analyzed and disseminated to those who need it in a timely manner.
