AURORA, Colo. --

A traffic stop became much more serious early Saturday morning when a fleeing suspect made a grab for an Aurora police officer’s service weapon.

Antonio Lavan Johnson was stopped near the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Scranton Street on suspicion of driving under the influence just after 12 a.m., said Aurora police spokesman Detective Bob Friel. The 31-year-old attempted to flee, leading police on a foot chase.

When an officer caught up, Johnson tried to wrestle away the officer’s weapon, said Friel. The officer then radioed for backup.

One of several units responding was involved in an accident. A sergeant received minor injuries to his wrist.
