JACKSON, Miss. --
The attorney for a veteran police officer accused of receiving stolen property said the officer has been fired by the Jackson Police Department.
JPD said some electronic equipment that had been reported stolen during a burglary was tracked through GPS to Sgt. Tony Davis' home. A Hinds County grand jury found enough probable cause to issue an indictment, and an arrest warrant was issued for Davis, police said.
Davis' attorney, Faye Peterson, said her client has been wrongly accused.
"If they thought that he had committed a crime, he had a right to have a probable cause hearing. They bypassed that by running that to the grand jury," Peterson said.
Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith said proper procedures were followed.
"We certainly can go forward with evidence and present it to a grand jury," Smith said. "Now, they have a right to challenge any and all aspects of the grand jury and procedural aspects of this indictment."
Davis, a 19-year veteran of the Jackson Police Department and former commander of the Police Training Academy, turned himself in Tuesday at the Hinds County Detention Center. He was charged with receiving stolen property, the Hinds County District Attorney's Office said.
Davis waived his initial appearance in court and was released on $5,000 bond, court officials said.
