A Porter County Sheriff's Deputy was injured in a crash early Thursday evening while responding to a personal injury crash on State Road 130.
At approximately 4:46 pm, Indiana State Police Senior trooper Mike Jones responded to a crash on State Road (SR) 149 where Porter County Sheriff's Deputy Paul Arnold, 29, a two year veteran of their department, was south bound on SR 149 with emergency lights and siren activated on his fully marked 2009 Ford Crown Victoria police car. He was responding to a personal injury crash that was located at SR 130 and 250 West.
As Arnold was responding he began to go around a couple of vehicles that were pulling over to the side of the road yielding to his emergency vehicle. As Arnold approached a 1997 GMC pick-up, driven by James E. Marshall, 53 of Valparaiso, who was also south bound on SR 149, the pick-up made a left turn in front of the police car. Marshall was attempting to turn left onto 550 North. The passenger front of the police car hit the GMC pick-up's front. This caused the police car to leave the roadway, go up an earth embankment, and come to rest in a field.
Witnesses stated that Arnold's police car did have its emergency lights and siren activated although Marshall stated he did not see the emergency lights or hear the siren.
Deputy Arnold was taken to Porter Hospital in Valparaiso with complaint of pain to his head, neck and back. Marshall was not injured.
