METAIRIE, La. --
Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies said they arrested the man wanted in connection with the shooting of a New Orleans police officer.
Deputies said they arrested Troy Armstead, 23, about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Gretna.
New Orleans police said Armstead shot Officer Terrance Hilliard during a traffic stop in Algiers on Tuesday about 9 p.m. Paramedics said the officer was taken to a hospital.
Authorities said that Armstead is no stranger to the criminal system. He was on probation for possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, and he's been accused of second-degree battery, possession of a stolen vehicle and has a slew of drug charges.
Investigators from the Criminal Intelligence Center along the U.S. marshal's office said they developed information that led to the locating of Armstead.
"The officer approached the apartments and apprehended Armstead without incident. He was taken into custody," Col. John Fortunato, of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, said.
Many neighbors said they were on edge while officers combed the streets looking for Armstead.
Police said Armstead was hiding in his girlfriend's apartment, where said he was arrested, in the 1900 block of block of Lafayette Street.
Fortunato said it's the first big arrest since the opening of a new criminal intelligence center in Metairie, where law enforcement officers from across the metro work together to solve crimes.
"We actually have officers from (different) agencies sitting in an office working together collectively to try to find out what they can about a suspect who's being sought," Fortunato said.
Investigators with the NOPD, JPSO and Gretna Police Department are conducting follow up investigations and plan to get a search warrant at the location.
