INDIANAPOLIS --
A random text sent to a retired law enforcement officer led to the arrests of two people on seven felony drug charges.
Indiana State Police said the retired officer told a trooper Wednesday that he had received text messages asking if he would like to buy methamphetamine or heroin.
The trooper responded to the text and set up a meeting with the sender at a home in the 400 block of Oak Street in Mitchell, ISP said.
Once officers arrived, they noted a strong odor often associated with the manufacture of methamphetamine and found a 16-year-old boy preparing the drug in the garage of the home.
"The juvenile was transported by ambulance to the hospital due to hyperventilation caused from the toxic fumes produced from the lab," ISP Sgt. Curt Durnil said. "Officers located seven other juveniles inside the residence, ranging in age from 2 to 15 years of age."
Police said they found a "large quantity" of methamphetamine in the home, along with heroin, marijuana and paraphernalia used in association with drugs.
Carlis James Vincent, 34, and the juvenile were arrested on charges of manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine and possession of precursors with intent to manufacture. Vincent was also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The Department of Child Services was called in to take custody of the children.
