Nov. 06--A man is dead after a police officer wounded him in a shooting outside a bowling alley in the Town of Beloit early Sunday morning. The officer himself sustained a nonlife-threatening gunshot wound to his leg.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice is now investigating the incident, which took place in the parking lot of Rex Lanes at 2547 S. Park Ave. at 1:43 a.m.
Town of Beloit police said in a news release that the officer "encountered a large crowd" and requested assistance. When he got out of his car, he heard gunshots and saw a man firing a handgun.
"Multiple shots were fired and officers from the City of Beloit and the Rock County Sheriff's Department responded to assist," Town of Beloit police said in the release.
The police officer and the man were transported to Beloit Memorial Hospital. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Officials would not release the ages or names of the people involved, pending notifications of relatives. No information was immediately available on whether the officer responded to an incident at the scene or was patrolling the area.
"While the investigation is continuing, there is no reason to believe the public is in danger from this incident," the Department of Justice said in a news release.
The state Division of Criminal Investigation, the Rock County Sheriff's Department and the Beloit Police Department are investigating the incident and are still seeking more information on what happened.
