DENVER --
Denver police are searching for a 32-year-old man accused of breaking a female officer's hand when she tried to arrest him on Monday morning.
Investigators have obtained an arrest warrant for Peter Edward VanVolkinburg who is wanted for felony assault on a police officer, said police spokesman Sonny Jackson.
Just before 10 a.m., a Denver patrol officer driving near 29th and Downing streets spotted a vehicle wanted in connection with a hit-and-run collision in Denver, Jackson said.
The officer pulled the vehicle over and identified the driver as VanVolkinburg, Jackson said.
The officer was handcuffing the man when he resisted, injuring the officer, Jackson said.
VanVolkinburg, with a handcuff locked on his right wrist, fled on foot west toward Curtis Park, Jackson said. He was wearing a blue and white checkered shirt at the time.
A brief lockdown was placed on nearby child care centers and at Gilpin Montessori Public School, located at 2949 California St., but it was quickly lifted.
The unidentified officer was treated at Denver Health Medical Center for a broken hand.
