March 20--KNOXVILLE -- The Knox County Sheriffs' Office deputy involved in a late-night crash had his emergency lights and siren on when another driver hit him broadside, authorities said today.
KCSO Deputy Kevin West was driving westbound with his dog Monday around 9 p.m. at the intersection of West Town Way and the Interstate 40 ramp when an eastbound 2001 Buick LeSabre hit him on the passenger side, KCSO spokeswoman Hillary Coward said.
West was treated at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Neither the Buick's driver, John McDonald, 61, of Knoxville nor the dog was injured. Both drivers wore seatbelts.
Two other drivers told officers they pulled over when they saw West's emergency lights and heard his siren, Coward said. McDonald told officers he was busy looking at the stopped cars and didn't see West's cruiser until he T-boned it.
McDonald will be cited for failure to yield. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, Coward said.
