April 30--This week, residents can learn how they can track an inmate, throw away old junk, plan ahead for a DMV's five-day closing and honor a retired deputy.
Inmates on the Web
If you've ever wondered how full a jail is and who is in it, you're in luck if you live in Livingston County.
Sheriff Steve Cox and his office's recently renovated website, www.livcoso.org, have added a new feature -- its jail roster. Last week the office launched the new section with photos and booking details for each person in the detention center, as well as those released in the past 48 hours. In addition, residents can receive text alerts each morning, showing who has been incarcerated or released within the past 24 hours.
"If the fear of being featured on the website prevents anyone from making bad choices and violating the law, then everyone wins," Mr. Cox said in a news release.
Kansas DMVs to close for several days
Brown and Doniphan County residents should be aware that if they're trying to get something done at the Department of Motor Vehicles from Tuesday through May 7, they're going to have to wait.
Due to the state upgrading its records systems, products such as title and license renewal, as well as tags and online vehicle registration, will all be down. County treasurer offices will be closed as the updates are made.
Treasurers encourage people in need of updating their license or registration to get those things done before the office closes on Tuesday.
Sheriff's deputy retires
Twenty years with the Clinton County Sheriff's Department was sufficient for Deputy Jim Banks, who retired last week.
A Plattsburg resident and former truck driver, Mr. Banks retired his badge after a long run with the department, including a part-time stint as police chief for the town of Trimble.
Speaking with the Clinton County Leader, Mr. Banks said he was once hesitant to retire, but not any more.
"Everyone thinks I'm going to be bored. Here's the thing about being bored: Take a nap and it goes away," he told the paper.
Clean-up set in Tarkio
Tarkio residents in need of some last spring or early summer cleaning will have their chance this week.
Items that will be picked up by the city during the annual clean-up include air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, all scrap metal, furniture and beds, TVs, microwaves and batteries. No garbage will be picked up. The city asks citizens to box, bag or bind all appliances and sort them by type, or they will not be picked up.
The schedule is: Today -- Olive Street to Vine Street; Tuesday -- Poplar Street to College Street; Wednesday -- Maple Street to Main Street; Thursday -- Elm Street to South City Limits, and Friday -- Rain Day or Catch-Up Day. All items should be placed on the curbside, except on Walnut Street.
