May 13--A 31-year-old Oxnard man was arrested today after allegedly assaulting a police officer, authorities said.
About 1:30 p.m. Oxnard officers responded to a man yelling and threatening children in the 2400 block of Saviers Road, police said
A responding officer arrived and attempted to detain the suspect, later identified as Octavio Salgado.
Salgado turned and started to fight with the officer, police said. During the fight, Salgado tried to remove the officer's gun from his holster on two separate occasions, police said. The officer requested emergency backup and after additional officers arrived on scene, Salgado was taken into custody. He was taken to Ventura County Medical Center for injuries he sustained during the arrest, police said.
The primary officer was also treated for minor injuries at Saint John's Hospital and released. The incident was witnessed by over 100 people at the Centerpoint Mall, police said.
Salgado, who was on the Post Release Offender program, was booked at Ventura County jail on suspicion of numerous felony counts, including assault on a peace officer, police said.
