A Wabash Valley (Indiana) Correctional Officer died Sunday (Aug. 26) after collapsing while assisting in the escort of an unruly inmate to segregation.
According to The Tribune-Star, a local newspaper published in Terre Haute, Timothy Betts, 51, of Jasonville, died of an apparent heart attack during the interaction with the offender.
Medical staff at the facility began CPR and used an AED on Betts and resuscitation efforts continued in the ambulance. Betts was rushed to Sullivan County Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the newspaper.
According to Betts’ obituary, he had worked for at the correctional facility for 16 years and, 1979, graduated from the Shakamak High School in Jasonville where he lived. He is survived by his wife, whom he married in 1981, three adult children and two grandchildren in addition to his parents and sisters and brothers.
Arrangements are being handled by Cox Funeral Home; 218 South Meridian Street; Jasonville, Indiana with Visitation scheduled from 4-9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the Funeral Home. Funeral Services are 11 a.m. Friday, August 31, 2012 at the Cox Funeral Home with Pastor Tracy Hamilton officiating.
Interment will be at Lebanon Cemetery in Midland, IN.
