Sept. 06--A domestic disturbance late Wednesday night in Newberry ended with an apparent suicide and an injured officer.

Two officers responded to Fulmer Street after being summoned by one participant in a domestic fight just before midnight.

As the officers approached the front door, the other participant in the fight, now alone in the home, reportedly fired a weapon, injuring one officer in the arm, Capt. Kevin Atkins said.

The department called for assistance and the home was surrounded by officers from the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division, Newberry County Sheriff's Department and Newberry Police Department.

Officers over the next few hours attempted unsuccessfully to convince the suspect to leave the home. Around 3 a.m., a SLED robot entered the home and found the occupant dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

An autopsy will be conducted Thursday, Atkins said. The department will release more information about the officers and suspect after that, he said.

He described the wounded officer as a veteran with more than 20 years on the force.

This story will be updated when more information is available.
