Sept. 23--An off-duty Miami-Dade police officer was in stable condition late Saturday after being shot in the chest near Union Christian Baptist Church at 6701 NW Seventh Ave. in Liberty City during a robbery, police said.
According to Lt. Rosanna Cordero-Stutz of the Miami-Dade Police Department, the officer was retrieving something from his vehicle after 5 p.m. Saturday when he was approached by three black males, ages 17 to 20, one of them armed with a semiautomatic pistol. They demanded and took property from him before shooting him, she said, and fled in a red 2007 to 2008 model Pontiac G6.
The officer, who is in his 30s, used his cellphone to call for help and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was in stable condition Saturday night.
He has been with Miami-Dade police for more than six years, Cordero-Stutz said, declining to release his name.
