A Puerto Rico police officer died Wednesday night after being shot in the head by a suspect during a foot pursuit.
Officer Ivan G. Román Matos, 34, responded to reported burglary at a Walgreens pharmacy while patrolling in the municipality of Toa Baja on the northern coast of the island, according to El Nuevo Dia.
His partner pursued one suspect while Matos went after the other.
The suspect then pulled his gun while outside of the store, shooting Matos four times in the face.
Matos was transported to Dr. Center in Bayamón where he was pronounced dead.
The two suspects fled the scene and remain at large.
He was only on the force for 16 months and leaves behind a 9-year-old son.
Matos is the fifth officer from the Puerto Rico Police Department to die in the line of duty this year.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
