A police officer on a drug task force shot and killed a 17-year-old who pulled a weapon and tried to rob him Tuesday in Southfield, police said.
The officer was working undercover at about 3:45 p.m. during an investigation at the Cornerstone Village condominium complex off Greenfield Road, north of 9 Mile Road, according to information from Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe.
The male teenager, who is from Southfield, pulled out a weapon and put it to the officer's head in a robbery attempt, authorities said. The officer drew his gun and fired shots at him. The teen was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead there, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Southfield Police Lt. Nick Loussia said no officers or bystanders were hurt. The shooting happened outdoors at the complex, authorities said.
Police did not release the 17-year-old's name.
The officer involved in the shooting is a Madison Heights police officer and member of the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Enforcement Team. The team is comprised of sheriff's deputies and officers from the Drug Enforcement Agency and 13 police departments in Oakland County.
Madison Heights Deputy Police Chief Corey Haines said the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, following standard protocol.
