NASHUA, N.H. -- A news conference will be held Friday to detail the case of a man who jumped bail 22 years ago on the night before a jury convicted him of murdering his 2-year-old stepson.
The FBI said the news conference, which will be held today at 3:30 p.m. at the Nashua Police Department building at 0 Panther Drive, will announce "the conviction and sentencing of Steven Kamberidis" for the murder of James Chartier.
Kieran Ramsey, supervisory agent in charge of the FBI's New Hampshire office, said Kamberidis "is alive. He's in custody. And he's going to be in prison for a long time."
A report on WMUR Channel 9 Thursday evening said Kamberidis was found in Greece in February.
Ramsey declined to say precisely where Kamberidis was Thursday night, saying more details would be released at today's news conference. However, he confirmed that Kamberidis "is not in the United States. He is in a foreign country."
Kamberidis was convicted in 1991 of beating Chartier savagely, then refusing to allow the boy to receive medical care.
"It was a very heinous crime," Ramsey said.
Kamberidis had posted $50,000 bail and was staying with his parents in Manchester when he disappeared. He was sentenced in absentia to 30 years to life in prison.
Thursday's news release said the news conference would be jointly hosted by the FBI, the U.S. Attorney's Office, New Hampshire Attorney General's Office and Nashua police. U.S. Attorney John Kacavas could not be reached Thursday night for comment.
