A 24-year-old man was killed in the South Shore neighborhood and six others have been shot in the city since midday Sunday, including a 26-year-old woman and her toddler son, acording to authorities.
About 3:20 p.m., a man was shot in his head on the 2400 block of East 75th Street in the South Shore neighborhood, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said.
The 24-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. His name was being withheld pending notification of his family.
Less than three hours later, a mother and her son were shot in the West Englewood neighborhood.
The shooting happened shortly before 6 p.m. on the 1700 block of West 73rd Street, police said
Witnesses said three gunmen stepped out of a van and started shooting, said John Edwards, an uncle of the 26-year-old woman shot.
The woman had been sitting in the passenger's seat of a minivan with her son on her lap, Edwards said.
Three other women were in the parked vehicle, and four other children were sitting inside or nearby, said Edwards, who was nearby and rushed to the scene to help.
A family friend drove both to Holy Cross Hospital. The toddler, who police said is two and Edwards said will turn two this summer, was later taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
Both their conditions were stabilized, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss said.
About 2:10 a.m. this morning, two men were shot in the 100 block of East 58th Street, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.
One of the men was shot in the leg and taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. The other sustained gunshot wounds to the chest and leg and was taken to Provident Hospital.
Eearlier Sunday night, a 22-year-old man was shot in the 3000 block of South Avers Avenue, in the Little Village neighborhood.
The man was taken with the a gunshot wound to the arm to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, Alfaro said.
Another male was wounded late this morning in a shooting in the city's Morgan Park neighborhood.
That shooting happened about 11:22 a.m. on the 1300 block of West 112th Street. According to preliminary information, the male was inside a car when another vehicle pulled up and someone from inside fired shots, said News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.
The victim, whose age was not immediately available, suffered a gunshot wound to his shoulder, Mirabelli said, citing preliminary information.
There was no information immediately available about where the victim was taken for treatment.
