A 14-year-old boy shot and killed his father Tuesday afternoon at an auction house in rural western Shawnee, police said.
The boy's mother and stepfather brought him to Lindsay Auction Service at 4795 Frisbie Road about 2:50 p.m. for an arranged custody exchange with the boy's father, said Shawnee Police Maj. Bill Hisle.
Investigators believe the mother and stepfather went inside and the boy walked over to the car in which his father was sitting and shot him with a handgun. The mother and stepfather came out to see what happened, and the boy relinquished the gun, police said.
The stepfather called 911 and the boy remained with them, waiting for the police to arrive.
The father died at the scene.
It was not immediately clear how the boy acquired the gun. He was in custody Tuesday night. Police have no other suspects.
Hisle said the auction house was not directly involved. It apparently was just the location of the custody exchange.
He described the incident as shocking.
"We do not have a motive. We do not know why it occurred," Hisle said.
The auction house is in Kansas River bottomland, amid some cornfields. A large building is on the property, as are several semi-trailers.
Ken Volen, whose wife works at the business, said the 14-year-old boy was related by marriage to Volen's wife. He said he did not know the victim.
