A dispute turned violent in south suburban Posen today, with a man attacking his ex-girlfriend and fatally shooting her boyfriend before he himself was shot dead by police, officials said.
The condition of the woman was not known but she was treated at a hospital, a law enforcement source said.
The incident occurred in the vicinity of the 14500 block of South Campbell Avenue this morning when a man attacked his girlfriend and her boyfriend as they returned home, officials said. Police from several suburbs responded and the man was shot by a Blue Island police officer, officials said.
Posen police said in a statement there was a "domestic-related homicide" and also a police-involved shooting. They offered no specifics, including a time the shootings took place.
One man, an Alsip man, age 27, was pronounced dead at 12:07 p.m. at the scene in the 14400 block of South Campbell Avenue following a shooting, while the man who died in a police-involved shooting, age 28, was declared dead at Ingalls Memorial Hospital at 12:34 p.m., the Cook County medical examiner's office said. Names of the victims were not released.
State police said they were investigating because the shooting involved an officer.
Judy Daehn-Hartwig, 59, said she was headed out to her garage around 11 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. when she saw a cop holding a rifle in the driveway next door.
She said the police officer asked if she'd seen anyone running this way. She was startled and said no, and then ran back into her house. "Then I heard shots ... pop pop, two shots," she said. "I'm nervous about it. I'm uptight."
Another neighbor, Jack Liu, said he walked out of his home and saw a police car blocking his driveway. "Jack, go back, go back," a neighbor yelled at him. "I went into her house and she said police tried to shoot somebody."
In addition to State Police, the South Suburban Major Crime Task Force was investigating, according to the Posen news release.
