A former Tulsa County, Oklahoma reserve sheriff's deputy received was sentenced on Tuesday in the accidental fatal shooting of an unarmed suspect last year.
Robert Bates was sentenced by a judge to the maximum punishment of four years in prison after he was convicted of manslaughter last month, according to The Tulsa World.
The sentencing came about a month after a jury found that the 74-year-old former law enforcement officer was negligent in mistaking his gun for a Taser when he fatally shot 44-year-old Eric Harris on April 2, 2015.
"(Bates) found himself in that position because of his own decisions," District Judge William Musseman told the court as he delivered the sentence.
Bates' attorney, Clark Brewster, said that he intends to file a direct appeal.
