WASHINGTON— A nationwide database tracking misconduct by US police officers has been shut down following an order by President Donald Trump.
A note on the Department of Justice's website states Trump had revoked an executive order signed by former president Joe Biden and the National Law Enforcement Accountability Database (NLEAD) would be decommissioned.
"User agencies can no longer query or add data to the NLEAD. The U.S. Department of Justice is decommissioning the NLEAD in accordance with federal standards."
Trump proposed the creation of the database during his first term in the White House, before it was formally created by Biden.
The database was created as part of reforms that came from the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests following the murder of George Floyd.
Derek Chauvin, a former police officer in Minneapolis, used his knee to pin Floyd to the ground for more than nine minutes in May 2020. He was convicted of murder and violating Floyd's rights.
