Video: Parked Ore. Police Car Sets off Crashes on Icy Road

Dec. 8, 2022
A bystander captured video footage of a Pendleton police SUV sliding down a frozen road, hitting a parked boat and trailer and setting off a chain reaction of crashes.

An Oregon police cruiser parked on an icy road created a domino effect when it slid into other parked vehicles earlier this week.

The slippery incident involving a Pendleton patrol SUV happened Monday, and it was caught on video by a bystander, AccuWeather reports. In the video, the unoccupied police SUV can be seen slowly sliding backward down the road.

The out-of-control SUV struck a boat connected to a trailer as two Pendleton police officers looked on. The SUV only struck the boat, but that initial impact was enough to send a truck down a hill, setting off a chain reaction of crashes.

No injuries were reported in the incident. The accident was just one example of the complications caused by a 3-inch snowfall Sunday and freezing fog Monday.

"The crashes were concentrated in the hills, of course," Pendleton Police Chief Charles Byram told the East Oregonian. "No injuries resulted, just property damage. I guess that's what we have insurance for. But it's a lot for us to handle in one day, with our normal workload."
