Video: Gunman Empties Ariz. Restaurant; Standoff, Shootout Ensue
A standoff erupted into a shootout between Phoenix police and a gunman who walked into a fast food restaurant with a rifle and terrorized customers and employees last month.
The gun battle happened at around 11:30 a.m. Dec. 18 when Marion Douglas Joyner, 62, entered a Whataburger fast food location's dining area from the back of the building, KPHO-TV reports. He ordered everyone out of the restaurant, and bystanders called 9-1-1.
“A guy came through the store in the back with … it looked like a 9mm and an assault rifle,” a witness told dispatchers, according to KPHO.
Customers and employees emptied out of the restaurant, and police arrived at the scene. A standoff ensued, and at one point, Joyner pointed his weapon at a police helicopter.
During the standoff, Joyner fired shots at police through the restaurant's glass windows. Police deployed a drone to get a better look at inside the building, and a security camera actually picks up the device hovering in the air.
When Joyner noticed the drone, however, he lifted his rifle. That's when police opened fire, fatally shooting Joyner.
No officers were injured in the incident. A cruiser was struck by gunfire.
