Prosecutors said Wednesday that they believe Karen Read backed her car into her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, hours before he was found dead during Saturday’s nor’easter.
O’Keefe was off-duty, and the pair was at a bar until after midnight Friday, according to court documents. When Read dropped O’Keefe at a home in Canton, investigators believe she hit him while making a three-point turn. Hours later, after growing worried that he had not returned to their home, prosecutors said Read and a friend found O’Keefe in the snow outside the Canton house.
O’Keefe, a 16-year Boston officer, was taken from the home on Fairview Road to Good Samaritan Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Police on Tuesday arrested Read, a 41-year-old Mansfield resident. She was charged with motor vehicle homicide, manslaughter and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision causing death, the Norfolk District Attorney’s office said.
Read was held on $50,000 bail. She pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Read did not see O’Keefe enter the Canton house, court document stated. Around 4:30 a.m., worried that O’Keefe had not arrived home, she called him several times and then drove with a friend to the Canton house. There, they found O’Keefe on the ground.
The Boston Police Department release a statement Sunday mourning the loss of the veteran officer.
“John will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues here at the Boston Police Department as we send our heartfelt condolences to his family, and loved ones during this difficult time,” Superintendent-in-Chief Gregory Long said.
