Police at departments in Nevada and Idaho had a little fun with their communities on April 1 with proposed off-the-wall—and entirely facetious—equipment and uniform changes.
For April Fools' Day, the Reno Police Department rolled out a new branch of its agency: the Roller Unit, which would deploy officers downtown on roller skates. The announcement on social media even included a video of officers demonstrating their eight-wheel prowess.
"With state of the art technology from Roller Kingdom (roller rink) and sleek design, the roller unit will be a game-changer for situations requiring quick, agile movement in the downtown urban environment," the April Fools' prank stated.
Not to be outdone, the Jerome Police Department had their own attire adjustments to announce. In anticipation of one of the hottest summers ever, the agency unveiled its "Tactical Kilt" on social media as a way for officers to beat the heat.
"With record setting highs, well into the triple digits, keeping our officers cool has become a top priority. We believe the "Tactical Kilt" is the answer," the department stated. "We are taking transparency to a new level, (don't complain if you are the one looking 👀) and would like to outline the numerous benefits of a Tactical Kilt over the traditional uniform pant. "
And what are those benefits the agency touted? Comfort, style, versatility and unisex appeal ("Research indicates that 78% less time is spent in the restroom when compared to a duty belt & normal uniform pant.") were all listed as benefits.
But the department claimed that the big reason for changing to the Tactical Kilts was the fact that they are just so breathable.
"Tactical Kilts allow for increased air flow and ventilation ( in both directions 🔄) which will keep our officers cool and comfortable in the upcoming summer months," the department stated.
