Ballistic Vest Saves Ill. Police Officer's Life

A Rockford police officer on patrol was struck by a bullet that passed through the passenger side door of his vehicle.

ROCKFORD — A Rockford police officer who was shot early Thursday escaped harm thanks to his ballistic vest.

The name of the four-year veteran was not released.

About 1 a.m., officers were in the area of South Third and Pope streets when they heard a gunshot from close range.

A bullet passed through the passenger side door of one of the officers' vehicles. The officer felt a sharp pain in his side, however, the bullet did not penetrate his ballistic vest. The bullet was later found on the floorboard of the vehicle.

The officer was uninjured but was evaluated at a local hospital as a precaution.
