A Pennsylvania man has been charged with attempted murder after attacking police officers with a pickaxe during a standoff in Bergen County earlier this year, officials from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said Monday.
Tyre R. Dunn, 36, of York, Pennsylvania was charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder, first-degree armed burglary, two counts of second-degree aggravated assault, weapons offenses, resisting arrest and obstruction, officials said.
On Jan. 27, officers with the Bergen County Regional SWAT team assisted the FBI and Lodi Police Department with the arrest of Dunn, who was wanted in connection to a criminal investigation in Pennsylvania, authorities said.
Dunn fled arresting officers and barricaded himself in a shed attached to a home on Stokes Street while armed with a pickaxe, according to officials.
After officers from the SWAT team called for Dunn to surrender, he emerged from the shed swinging the pickaxe and struck an FBI agent in the bulletproof vest, officials said.
The axe did not pierce the vest and Dunn was apprehended, authorities said.
Dunn was arrested and taken to the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, officials said.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into the incident and Dunn was served with the New Jersey charges in the Schuylkill County Prison, where he remains in custody pending the outcome of the Pennsylvania charges, officials said.
The nature of the Pennsylvania charges against Dunn was not immediately clear.
An attorney for Dunn was not listed in online New Jersey court records Monday.
