A dashboard camera captured a frightening moment over the weekend when a Georgia deputy's bulletproof vest prevented a shooting from turning tragic.
The incident happened Sunday when Jones County Sheriff's Deputy John Kile was making a traffic stop, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. That's when the vehicle's driver shot Kile before speeding off.
Newly released footage shows Kile being struck by the gunfire, but he was protected by the bullefproof vest he was wearing. He was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released.
"Even with the bulletproof vest doing it’s job, it is still very painful," Sheriff R.N. "Butch" Reece stated in a social media post. "Deputy Kile managed to stay in the fight and see things through until the suspect was taken into custody."
Deputies pursued the 24-year-old driver and alleged shooter, and they used stop sticks and a PIT maneuver to disable the suspect's vehicle and apprehend him.
"We are so thankful no one was seriously injured in this incident and want to thank everyone in our community that has reached out during this time," Reece stated. "The outpouring of support and prayers for both Deputy Kile and all our law enforcement is much appreciated."
