Dashcam video of the incident that left a Montague County Sheriff's deputy fighting for his life was released on Wednesday.
Deputy James Boyd was shot several times after pulling over fugitive Evan Ebel on Highway 287 in Bowie, Texas on March 21, according to KFDX-TV.
The video shows Boyd walking behind the black Cadillac with Colorado plates and then around to the passenger side of the vehicle.
As the deputy bends over to speak with the driver, he's shot three times before the vehicle speeds away.
"You feel every round that hits him yourself," Sheriff Paul Cunningham told the news station.
One of the shots ricocheted off of Boyd's chest into his cell phone, one went across his shoulder while a third bullet grazed his head embedding bone fragments in his brain.
Boyd was wearing his bulletproof vest at the time of the shooting.
Two minutes pass before an off-duty Johnson County Sheriff's detective stopped to help Boyd, calling dispatch from his radio.
Cunningham credits Boyd's quick thinking in the capture of Ebel, who was wanted in the death of Colorado Corrections Chief Tom Clements.
"If he hadn't been for his ability to get so much information out so quick, Ebel might not have been caught," Cunningham said.
Authorities caught up with Ebel in Decatur, where he crashed and was shot in a gun battle with officers before dying in a Fort Worth hospital.
