An Iowa sheriff's deputy escaped serious injury when he was sideswiped by an SUV while he was outside his cruiser and helping a stranded motorist over the weekend.
The incident happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. as Dallas County Sheriff's Deputy Brandon Bjoin was helping a driver whose vehicle had been stuck in the median along Interstate 80, the sheriff's stated in a press release. That's when an accident involving an SUV unfolded behind the officer, who was talking to the stranded driver.
The out-of-control SUV entered the median where Bjoin was standing and struck him. The deputy was hit on his right arm, and the impact sent him to the ground.
Bjoin was taken to the hospital, and he was released with bruises on his arm. The stranded motorist who also was on the median was uninjured.
"Deputy Bjoin was extremely lucky that he did not suffer a major injury or death," the sheriff's office stated.
"We hope this serves as a reminder to all motorists to slow down when you see flashing lights and to use caution in winter driving situations," the agency added.
