Body camera footage captured the stabbing of an Ohio police officer while he was trying to de-escalate a tense situation during a mental health call last week.
The incident happened Thursday when Dayton police were dispatched to a home for a report about an individual in crisis, WKEF-TV reports. Once at the scene, Officer George Kloos and another officer talked for 15 minutes with a 29-year-old man, who told police he was hearing voices in his house.
“Are you feeling homicidal, suicidal? I came here to talk to you," Kloos is heard telling the man in recently released body camera footage, "Do you have a healthcare worker that you talk to?"
When Kloos mentioned a local medical center, the man became upset, saying he didn't want to go. Then he lunged at Kloos with a knife and stabbed him in the neck.
“These officers were doing a phenomenal job at de-escalation," Maj. Jason Hall told WKEF. "The patience they showed we are extremely proud of, and I’ll be honest, I don’t know what more they could have done in these situations."
According to doctors, the stabbing just missed Kloos' arteries, but his wounds were not life-threatening, WLWT-TV reports. He is at home recovering.
The man faces aggravated felonious assault and other charges.
