A Florida sheriff's officer was critically wounded early Sunday while helping fellow officers with a follow-up investigation concerning a traffic stop last week.

The shooting happened when Jacksonville sheriff's officers arrived at a home to interview a 32-year-old man—Tyliko Maduro—accused of fleeing a traffic stop March 19 after admitting to running a red light, WJXT-TV reports. Body camera footage captured the encounter as officers talked with Maduro's mother at the door before the suspect opened fire.

Officer Malik Daricaud was struck once by the gunfire, and a SWAT unit responded to the scene. Sheriff T.K. Waters said Maduro took his own life during the incident, and no officers returned fire.

Daricaud was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was in "a lot of pain," according to Waters.

“We’re hoping he makes a full recovery,” said Waters. “I’m disappointed that this happened. I’m worried about our police officers. I’m angry at people that decide they want to shoot at police officers.”
