Bodycam Captures Violent Shootout that Injured 3 LAPD Officers

Three LAPD officers were shot and wounded when they confronted a fugitive parolee who had barricaded himself inside a shed and refused to surrender.

Recently released body camera footage shows a violent shootout that erupted when LAPD officers were tracking down a fugitive parolee.

The shooting, which wounded three officers, happened March 8 as members of the Hollenbeck Division Narcotics Enforcement Detail were searching for 32-year-old parolee Jonathan Magana, KABC-TV reports. The suspect had barricaded himself in a shed and refused to surrender.

A chemical agent was then deployed, according to police, and that's when Magnaa began shooting. Officers returned fire, and three from a K-9 unit were struck by shots in the exchange.

Once the shooting subsided, a SWAT unit deployed a robot dog to search for Magana. He was found unresponsive.

"Magana appeared to have been struck by gunfire," said police in the released footage.

Magana was pronounced dead at the scene. The three wounded officers were taken to the hospital, and two have been released, while the third is still in stable condition.

Earlier, police credited body armor with deflecting a shot that struck one of the officers.

Magana was released on parole last April stemming from a second-degree robbery conviction. He had served two year of a five-year sentence and was released early for good conduct.
