A Tennessee police officer was in critical-stable condition Thursday after he was shot in the side while pursuing an armed suspect in an incident that was caught on the officer's body camera.
Nashville police responded to a report of an armed individual breaking into vehicles near the airport shortly before 3 p.m., WKRN-TV reports. When Det. Donovan Coble and SWAT Officer Tim Brewer reached the scene, the suspect—Delama Casimir, 37—began fleeing and hopped a fence to try to escape the officers.
The foot pursuit cut through a residential backyard, and the officers repeatedly ordered Casimir to stop. As the chase continued, Casimir fired his .380 semiautomatic pistol over his shoulder.
Coble was struck in the side, but he was able to return fire. Police believe Casimir also was wounded in the exchange.
After he was shot, Coble stumbled to another officer's cruiser. He then was rushed to the hospital.
A SWAT unit continued searching for Casimir, and he was found hiding under a pile of brush. In footage from his bodycam, Brewer, a 16-year veteran of the department, is seen clearing away and ordering Casimir to surrender.
After hearing a possible gunshot, Brewer began shooting. Casimir was struck and was rushed to the hospital, where he died following surgery.
Coble, who has been on the force for four years, is expected to recover.
