'Send Everybody': Video Shows Bloody Ambush that Killed N.D. Officer

Aug. 17, 2023
Body camera footage was released of the violent attack by a gunman who opened fire on Fargo police officers responding to a routine crash, killing one officer and wounding two others.

Newly released body camera footage shows the violent ambush last month that left a North Dakota police officer dead and two others seriously wounded.

The three-minute video was part of a news conference held Thursday by North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley and Fargo Police Chief David Zibolski, the Grand Forks Herald reports. The footage from the July 14 attack came from the body camera of Officer Zach Robinson, who fatally shot gunman Mohamad Barakat.

The events leading up to the shooting are captured in the video as Barakat—armed with a rifle—opened fire on Robinson and three other officers at the scene of a routine traffic crash. In the footage, Robinson is seen taking cover behind a vehicle and returning fire before advancing on Barakat as he lay moving on the ground after being struck by gunfire.

Officer Jake Wallin was killed in the shooting, Officers Andrew Dotas and Tyler Hawes, along with a bystander, were injured. Wallin was able to fire a shot before he was killed, Wrigley said Thursday.

Dotas and Hawas were hospitalized for weeks. They've been released and are recovering at home.

Police said Barakat was planning a mass-casualty attack leading up to July's shooting. Three long rifles, four handguns, ammunition, gas-filled canisters and two propane tanks filled with Tannerite were found in his vehicle.

Wrigley said footage from the other officers' body cameras might be released in the future. Authorities have not made those videos public out of respect for the families of the officers killed and wounded in the attack, he added.
