Video: Foot Chase Ends with Cleveland Police Officer Dragged 10 Feet

Aug. 24, 2023
A Cleveland police officer clung to a fleeing suspect hanging out of a car as it drove away after a traffic stop for an improperly displayed license plate turned into a foot chase.

Body camera footage captured a foot chase last month between Cleveland police and a suspect following a traffic stop that ended with an officer being dragged for about 10 feet.

The incident happened July 29 after two officers stopped a car because it didn't have a visible license plate, WOIO-TV reports. A male suspect then exited the vehicle and began walking away as the officers got out of their cruiser.

“Stop walking away. Come here. Hands out of your pocket,” an officer is heard telling the suspect in body camera footage.

That's when the suspects began fleeing on foot, and the officers began chasing them. The pursuit went through a residential neighborhood, and the suspect eventually was picked up by the same car that had been initially stopped.

One of the officers was able to grab the suspect as he jumped in the car. The officer held on to the suspect as the car drove away, with the suspect hanging out of the vehicle as the officer was dragged behind.

After about 10 feet, the officer let go of the suspect, and the car continued to flee. The suspects have yet to be apprehended.

The officer refused medical attention following the incident.
