Video: Tenn. Police Officer Wounded in Shootout with Murder Suspect

July 16, 2024
A Nashville police officer was shot in the leg, and a man wanted in a March homicide was wounded in the hip and foot after gunfire erupted when police tried to arrest the suspect.

Body camera footage captured an apartment complex shooting that wounded a Tennessee police officer Monday while police were trying to apprehend a murder suspect.

The incident happened just before 1 p.m. when Nashville police were trying to arrest Miqueal Williams, who was wanted in a March homicide, the Nashville Tennessean reports. Members of The Investigative Team Addressing Neighborhood Shootings (TITANS) had learned Williams was at an apartment complex, and they confronted him after he and a woman entered a vehicle.

"When officers approached him, he opened fire," said Police Chief John Drake.

Officer Carlos Diaz, who was working undercover with the TITANS team, was struck in the leg, but he was able to reach a safe location despite being wounded. Another officer—Det. Joseph Gonzales—returned fire, shooting Williams in the hip and foot.

Diaz and Williams were rushed to hospital, and they are expected to recover from their injuries. Diaz joined the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department in November 2022. He had transferred from the NYPD.
