One person was killed and a Hamilton Township police officer was wounded during a shooting Friday night following a domestic violence call, Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin said Saturday (March 8) afternoon.
Hamilton police responded to the incident shortly after 10 p.m. Friday night on the 1800 block of Orchard Avenue and were met with gunfire, authorities said. A man with a rifle exchanged gunfire with responding officers and struck one officer multiple times, the Attorney General’s Office said.
The armed man was fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene Friday night, authorities said. A firearm was recovered near the person killed.
The wounded officer was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center and underwent surgery, authorities said. He was recovering Saturday morning, according to the New Jersey Police Benevolent Association. The PBA said the officer was “resting comfortably and has been up and talking today.”
“Our thoughts are with the officer and his partner who responded last night, and with the family of the decedent who suffered a tragic loss,” Platkin said in a statement Saturday afternoon. “We will also keep the entire Hamilton Township Police Department and the loved ones of all those affected in our prayers.”
“The incident is currently under investigation by my Office and that investigation will follow the established protocol,” Platkin added.
Hamilton Police Chief Kenneth DeBoskey also said Saturday the wounded officer is “expected to survive his injuries.” DeBoskey declined further comment, citing the attorney general’s probe.
“A reminder about the dangers all police officers face,” Hamilton Township mayor Jeff Martin wrote in a Facebook post early Saturday morning. “Please pray for him, his family, and the HTPD family during this stressful time.”
