Video: Driver Opens Fire at Wis. Sheriff's Deputy During Chase

Aug. 21, 2024
A Sauk County sheriff's deputy was shot and wounded when deputies confronted a reckless driver who opened fire after crashing during a pursuit.

A Wisconsin deputy was wounded last month when a man opened fire during a chase, in a shooting that was captured by the deputy's body camera and kicked off a manhunt that ended days later.

The incident happened shortly after 11 p.m. July 23 when a Sauk Prairie police officer tried to pull over a driver suspected of being impaired, WiscNews reports. The driver—identified as Jeremy Miller—fled, and Sauk County deputies encountered him minutes later.

The deputy was able to deploy stop sticks, but Miller evaded them. While traveling at a high rate of speed, the suspect crashed, with deputies in pursuit.

Miller began shooting as deputies reached the scene and then fled on foot. A deputy was grazed by a shot. He was treated and has recovered.

On July 25, Miller was located in Amherst, and SWAT units from the Portage County and Marathon County sheriff's offices executed a search warrant at the home he was at, according to the Stevens Point Journal. Miller fired on deputies, and a standoff ensued.

Tear gas was deployed, but Miller refused to exit. By July 26, deputies entered the home and found Miller dead. An autopsy later determined that he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
