Video: Texas Police Stop Fleeing Armed Man who Carjacked 2 Vehicles
Texas police fatally shot a fleeing armed man with an extensive criminal record who pointed a gun at officers after carjacking two vehicles earlier this month.
The incident began shortly after 3 a.m. Nov. 7 when Bee Cave police spotted a pickup truck traveling erratically at a high rate of speed, KTBC-TV reports. Dashboard and body camera footage of the incident was released Wednesday during a joint news conference with Austin police.
When police pulled over the vehicle, the driver waited for the officer to exit the cruiser before speeding away. A chase ensued, with the suspect driving the way during parts of the pursuit.
A Travis County sheriff's deputy was contacted for backup, but the chase ended when authorities lost sight of the vehicle. Using the license plate number to contact the owner, officers found that the driver was the owner's 27-year-old son, who was armed and had made self-harm remarks.
After the chase, the suspect—identified as Zachary Labrie—traveled to the Austin apartment of his ex-girlfriend. A doorbell camera captured a masked Labrie kicking in the door.
"He has a history with her of some family violence that included some strangulation," Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said during the press conference. "She was not home at the time. She was actually out of town, out of fear that she had."
An hour after that break-in, Labrie carjacked an employee in a Starbucks parking lot in Austin. Following that incident, Labrie carjacked another vehicle in an H-E-B parking lot.
Austin police converged on the apartment of Labrie's ex-girlfriend, where the suspect had returned.
When police reached the scene, Labrie began fleeing on foot. During the pursuit, he pointed a gun at officers, who openened fire.
Labrie was struck by gunfire, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. According to police, Labrie had bonded out of jail Oct. 29 and was issued an ankle monitor, which he removed during the incident.
The shooting is under investigation.
