Video: DUI Driver Slams into Fla. Police Cruiser, Starts Chain-Reaction Crash

Jan. 3, 2025
A Jacksonville sheriff's officer was helping motorists with a flat tire when an accused drunk driver plowed into the officer's cruiser with his pickup truck, causing a chain-reaction crash.

A Florida sheriff's officer was providing roadside assistance to a motorist when a suspected impaired driver plowed into his cruiser and set off a chain-reaction crash last month.

The incident happened shortly before 2:30 a.m. Dec. 26 when a Jacksonville County sheriff's officer had stopped to help two men with a flat tire on Mathews Bridge, the agency stated in a social media post. Once the tire was changed, however, a pickup truck plowed into the officer's cruiser, sending it into the previously disable vehicle.

"My leg! My leg!" one of the motorists receiving roadside assistance can be heard screaming in body camera footage when he became pinned in the crash.

The officer called in a rescue unit for the motorist, and he then ran toward the pickup, which was rolling down the bridge. The driver was unresponsive, and the officer needed to hit the brakes and put the truck in park.

Two people were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. The officer suffered minor injuries.

The pickup truck driver was arrested and faces multiple charges, including six DUI counts.
