A couple nearly made off with more than $38,000 in clothing they’re accused of stealing from a Lululemon store in Atlanta, Georgia police said.
A 35-year-old woman and 34-year-old man were arrested on charges of theft by taking and conspiracy to commit a crime in the Feb. 8 heist, according to the Atlanta Police Department.
The man also faces charges of improper lane change, failure to obey a traffic controlled device, fleeing and eluding, driving with an expired license and drug-related offenses, police said in a Feb. 18 news release.
Officers were called just after 4 p.m. on Feb. 8 about a shoplifting in progress at the popular athleisure store in West Midtown, police said. Employees told police they spotted a woman dressed in gray stealing several items inside the store.
As officers arrived, the woman slipped out the front door without anyone noticing. Police caught up with her after a brief foot chase and arrested her nearby, police body camera video shows.
Soon after, police said they noticed “a suspicious vehicle” speeding from the Lululemon parking lot. Body camera video shows an officer get into his patrol car and chase after it, eventually tracking the vehicle to a nearby lot.
The male driver was arrested without incident, officers said.
“A search of the suspect vehicle revealed a number of Lululemon clothing products, most of which still had the price tags and hangers attached to them,” police said in the release.
Officers also found a shopping bag with foil-like lining, “which is commonly used by shoplifters to avoid theft detection devices,” according to police.
Police went back to Lululemon to return 440 stolen items, which were valued at $38,709.59.
The man and woman were both taken to the Fulton County Jail, police said.
