Officers with the Houston Police Department shot a 17-year-old boy outside a southeast apartment complex Saturday, according to authorities.

The 17-year-old, along with a 15-year-old girl who was also involved but was not shot, allegedly fired on two police officers after attempting to escape a vacant unit at the Park De Ville apartments that the pair had allegedly broken into, said Assistant Chief J. Skelton during news conference. Skelton said police were contacted by the complex's management team after residents reported the break-in on the Neighborhood app.

"So as officers went to the apartment with management, they knocked on the door. Management entered the apartment using their key. The officers immediately faced a suspect with a weapon. Officers retreated and took positions at the location," Skelton said. "In the back is a high window. They broke out the window and once the suspects were able to get down on the ground, they immediately started firing upon our officers."

Both teens were transported to Memorial Herman Hospital where the 17-year-old, who was shot in the upper torso, underwent surgery and the 15-year-old is receiving treatment for a cut caused by broken glass, Skelton said. (Editor's note: The 17-year-old remains in the hospital.)

Skelton said further investigation into the teens' background revealed they both had warrants for charges related to previous home invasions and other violent crimes. He added that youths engaging in violent crime has become more common in Houston.

"It's very alarming. And it's something that we are starting to see in our city," he said. "So we're working very hard to try to curb that."

The officers who shot the teen have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation conducted by the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
