Video: Kan. Highway Patrol K-9 Injured when Semi Crashes into Cruiser
A Kansas Highway Patrol K-9 is out of a veterinary intensive care unit and home recovering after the dog was involved in a crash with a tractor-trailer last month.
The incident, was recorded by a cruiser's dashboard camera, happened Jan. 12 along Interstate 70 in Ellis County, the agency stated in a social media post. Troopers had shut down the roadway to deal with an overturned semi truck.
But a distracted driver in a tractor-trailer who was still on the roadway continued heading toward the troopers working at the initial accident scene.
"Both troopers attempted to gain the attention of the driver, but he failed to exit the highway, and struck Trooper Budke's vehicle, narrowly missing both Troopers as they ran to avoid being hit," stated the agency.
Igor, a Kansas Highway Patrol K-9, was still inside the cruiser when the tractor-trailer crashed into the vehicle. He was rushed to a veterinary clinic, where he underwent emergency surgery.
Igor was in intensive care for a few days and is now recovering at home, Trooper Tod Hileman stated in a social media post. Despite his severe injuries, Igor is expected to return to duty in the next few weeks.
No troopers were injured in the incident.
