Bodycam: Calif. Sheriff's K-9 Struck by Shotgun Blast During Chase

Obie, a K-9 with the Madera County Sheriff's Office, will live the rest of his life shotgun pellets in his body after he was wounded while pursuing an armed suspect accused of stealing a truck.

Body camera captured a frightening moment for a California sheriff's office when a K-9 with the agency was struck by a shotgun blast after a stolen vehicle chase turned into a foot pursuit last month.

The shooting happened shortly before 4 p.m. Nov. 20 when Madera County sheriff's deputies responded to a report from the owner of a truck that had been stolen, KFSN-TV reports. Deputies located the truck, kicking off a chase involving a 41-year-old man identified as Allen Scott Williams.

Eventually, the suspect stopped and jumped out of the truck. A foot chased ensued, and deputies deployed Obie, a K-9.

As Obie closed in on Williams, and he pivoted and opened fire with a shotgun. Obie was struck, and deputies returned fire, wounding Williams.

Obie was rushed to a veternairy hospital, where he was treated and released to recover at home. Pellets from the shotgun blast will remain in his body for the remainder of his life.

Williams also was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. He was wanted on several warrants and was on felony probation.
