A Puerto Rico police officer was taken off life support Monday after being severely wounded during a drug investigation on Aug. 19.
Agent Geniel Amaro-Fantauzzi was shot several times during the investigation at the April Gardens 1 public housing complex, on Carretera 917, in Las Piedras, according to El Nuevo Dia
Officials say that William Vázquez Tirado opened fire on the 35-year-old officer and other agents.
A second officer was also wounded but was expected to recover.
Amaro-Fantauzzi was transpoirted to Rio Piedras Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
Puerto Rico will observe three days of mourning with flags in public offices flown at half mast.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
