Mich. Police Officer Lauded for Kind Act

Instead of writing a mother a ticket, Emmett Township Officer Ben Hall bought her a car seat.

A police officer in Michigan is receiving attention for his act of kindness during a traffic stop last week.

Emmett Township Public Safety Officer Ben Hall responded to reports of a child riding in a vehicle without a car seat on Oct. 3 and met a woman who said she had fallen on hard times, according to WXMI-TV.

When the officer approached Alexis DeLorenzo, who had her 5-year-old daughter in the back seat, she admitted that she was in the wrong.

"When I spoke to [DeLorenzo] she was very forthcoming and knew that the child should be in a booster seat," he told the news station. "She admitted that she was wrong and that she had recently fallen on hard times."

To the mother's surprise, instead of ticketing her, Hall told her to meet him at a nearby Walmart. Once there, he bought her daughter a booster seat.

"A ticket doesn’t solve the situation," he told the news station. "What solves it, is the child being in a booster seat like she she should be. Easiest $50 I ever spent."

DeLorenzo said that she was grateful for the officer's actions.

"I'm really almost at a loss for words because he really didn't have to do that," she said.
