The Hohenwald police officer and Lewis County Sheriff's deputy responded to a violent home invasion at a residence around 7:15 p.m., according to WTVF-TV.

Investigators said that 18-year-old Allen Swader burst into the house and held a man inside hostage. The teen then allegedly stabbed the victim in the stomach before fleeing the residence with money and guns.

Despite his injuries, the homeowner was able to call the police.

The officer and the deputy were shot after Swader opened fire on them on North Park Street. Swader died at the scene from a gunshot wound.

The deputy was shot at least twice and taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The police officer was struck in the chest, but he was saved by his bulletproof vest.

"This really just speaks to the dangers that law enforcement face every day but this is why law enforcement in general does the training that it does, so that law enforcement officers know exactly what to do when it matters most," Josh DeVine with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation told the news station.

The incident is currently under investigation.
