An off-duty Harris County, Texas detention officer was shot five times after confronting a group of suspects attempting to steal his vehicle late Sunday night.
Officials said the deputy heard someone breaking into his vehicle at the Rock Creek Apartment Complex on Hollow Tree Lane in Houston shortly after 11:30 p.m. when the incident occurred, according to KTRK-TV.
Two men ran and jumped into a pickup truck where two other men were waiting after the deputy discovered them inside his vehicle.
One of the robbery suspects then fired at the detention officer who was pursuing them on foot.
The deputy sustained wounds to his face, arm and abdomen. Officials said he is expected to survive his injuries and was undergoing surgery at Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Houston police found the pickup truck abandoned and in flames a short time after the shooting.
No suspects have been arrested and the incident is currently under investigation.
